Now I totally understand what is “to look for a needle in a haystack”.

Search for Marilyn Monroe’s photo continues. The first step was to try “Marylin Monroe” in Google Images. Yuck! Look at the first one! Was it a mummy?
So I gave up. Tried “Monroe Nike” again. Bingo! Here is it! But who is Janet Champ? The lady who wrote the quote “A WOMAN IS OFTEN MEASURED by the things she cannot control”? The search for “Janet Champ” came up with a few links. This one is pretty intriguing. It says:

Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, OR
Nike
Women’s Fitness
Grand Prize Winner
Creative Directors: Dan Wieden, David Kennedy
Art Director: Charlotte Moore
Copywriter: Janet Champ
Photographer/Illustrator: Michael O’Brien

Was the guy named MIchael O’Brien who took the picture? Why the agency was not the Roger Richman Agency, Inc., Beverly Hills, CA but Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, OR.

That was an ad for two pieces of cotton, leather, and rubber called Nike Women’s Aerobic Shoes, from NetPreneur.

  • Hi.
I work as a copywriter in Advertising. And the only reason I got into this field is because of the ad you are describing above.
Janet Champ was a copywriter at Wieden & Kennedy. W&K has done all of Nike’s ads and continues to do them today.
The interesting story behind Champ is that she used to be the secretary there and then eventually became a copywriter.
She and her partner, Charlotte Moore helped inspire young women and girls. Their messages were about acceptance and motivation. There are a ton of more ads she did that are just as amazing and moving.
What’s sad is, now that I’m in the industry, I don’t see anyone doing anything moving like what those two women did. Everything is poo poo humor and sh*t.
    How unfortunate!
